    Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a 2022 action role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company for the Nintendo Switch. It is part of the eighth generation of the Pokémon series and serves as an interquel to Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (2021). The game was first announced during the Pokémon 25th Anniversary event and released worldwide on January 28, 2022.

    Setting and Story

    The game is set in the ancient Hisui region, a historical version of Sinnoh, inspired by Japan's Hokkaido during early colonization. Players assume the role of a protagonist sent back in time through a spacetime rift by Arceus, the creator deity of the Pokémon universe. Their mission is to explore the region, complete the first-ever Pokédex, and resolve disturbances caused by Noble Pokémon affected by mysterious lightning.

    Key story elements include:

    • Joining the Galaxy Expedition Team's Survey Corps based in Jubilife Village.
    • Choosing one of three starter Pokémon: Rowlet, Cyndaquil, or Oshawott.

    • Pokémon Interaction: Wild Pokémon exhibit varied behaviors—some flee, others attack aggressively. Players can catch Pokémon directly in the overworld or engage in turn-based battles.
    • Combat: The game retains turn-based battles but adds new mechanics like "Agile" and "Strong" styles to modify turn order or attack power.
    • Boss Fights: Special encounters with Noble Pokémon require players to dodge attacks in real-time while calming them with balms.

    The game was both a critical and commercial success:

    • It sold over 14.83 million copies by March 31, 2023.
    • Critics praised its innovative gameplay and setting but noted its graphics were less polished compared to other modern titles.

    Legacy

    Pokémon Legends: Arceus marked a bold step in evolving the Pokémon formula. A sequel titled Pokémon Legends: Z-A is scheduled for release in 2025.
